REPARTEE CLUB

Cultured, conveniently.

Five minutes a day. A lifetime of better dinner conversations.

What it is

The things worth knowing, a few minutes at a time

Art, classical music, architecture, and the stories behind them. Not a course and not homework. Just enough each evening to catch the reference, add one good line, and look as though you've always known.

This evening

One topic, one good story

The night Paris rioted over a ballet. The painter who paid his baker in paintings. Five minutes, then on with your evening.

At the table

Practice the reply

Someone at dinner brings it up. Choose the line that gets you invited back, and learn why it works.

Before you go

Three things to say

Off to the Met on Saturday, or the symphony on Thursday? Arrive with three things worth saying.

A sample evening

Well-read. Well-traveled. Well, almost.

Every evening ends at the table, because knowing something is only half of it. The other half is saying it lightly, at the right moment, without a lecture.

AT THE TABLE

Your host says

"We finally saw the Rothko Chapel in Houston."

"I love his colorful abstract paintings."
"He hoped people would weep in front of them. Did you?"
"Wasn't he part of Pop Art?"

Correct. Very casual of you.

You show you know what Rothko intended, and hand the conversation back to your host.

For people who'd rather not be caught googling
